Basic Questions
Short drama apps share one simple model. You watch tiny vertical episodes. The first few come free. Later ones cost coins or a pass. That split is the root of most confusion. Begin with the five answers below.
What is a short drama app, exactly?
Vertical video designed for phones is what it streams. Many bite-size episodes make up each series. The storylines favor billionaires, revenge and identity reveals. Werewolf romances also have broad popularity. The leaders are ReelShort, DramaBox, ShortMax and My Drama. The format first appeared in China, under the name duanju.
What is the length of each episode?
Most episodes last one to two minutes. Western productions often target quick dramas online 60 to 100 seconds. There are usually 20 to 100 episodes in a series. Married at First Sight shows 90 in ReelShort’s listing. Its hit Double Life series lists 60. A full series can run as long as a movie.
Why do episodes cut off at cliffhangers?
That is usually the point where free episodes end. According to ReelShort, its first 5 to 15 are usually free. Industry reporting mentions a figure of 8 to 10. Peak tension is where the lock tends to land. That timing is precisely the business model. It is also a top complaint from viewers.
Who owns ReelShort, DramaBox and My Drama?
ReelShort is owned by Crazy Maple Studio in Sunnyvale, California. Behind that studio is China’s COL Group. Singapore’s StoryMatrix, part of Beijing Dianzhong Technology, runs DramaBox. My Drama is a Holywater app, and the company was founded in Kyiv in 2020. Fox Entertainment took an equity stake in October 2025. ReelShort launched in 2022, DramaBox in 2023.
Can I watch in a web browser or on TV?
Yes, but with limits. On ReelShort’s website, you can sign in with Google, Facebook, Apple, TikTok or email. Progress carries over with the app. Only the app offers free unlocks. My Drama is available on Apple TV through its own app. We came across no verified ReelShort TV app at all.
Cost
Money is the subject people ask about most. All figures reflect US App Store prices as of September 2026. They vary according to country, platform and promotion. Treat each number as a rough guide. Always start by looking at the pricing screen. Below is what the listings show.
Is ReelShort free to use?
Partly, and the free part is genuine. People searching « is reel short free » or « is reel short app free » want to know the catch. The download costs nothing. You get the opening episodes free. Coins or a VIP pass are needed for the later ones. You can earn free coins from ads and check-ins.
How do coins actually work?
Episodes are unlocked with coins, the in-app currency. According to ReelShort’s blog, an episode costs roughly 60 coins. The smallest pack costs roughly $4.99 for 500 coins. Bonus coins are added to bigger packs. One rewarded ad unlocks two episodes. A 7-day check-in streak earns 100+ coins.
Do the coins expire?
The answer depends on the app. Free reward coins usually expire, says ReelShort. Coins you paid for do not run out. My Drama handles coins differently. Its terms forfeit coins after 12 months of inactivity. Stay active and spend reward coins first.
What does a weekly pass cost?
In the US, the usual price is roughly $19.99 a week. It is listed by ReelShort, ShortMax, DramaWave, GoodShort and My Drama. Cheaper tiers show up in some apps. ShortMax lists $9.99, while GoodShort starts at about $5.99. These passes all renew automatically. Four weeks you forget about cost four times as much.
Are there monthly or yearly plans?
Some apps do offer them. ReelShort’s blog lists a yearly plan at about $199.99. Its monthly price varies between pages. That figure is therefore unconfirmed. About $36.99 a month is what DramaWave lists. In the US, ShortMax shows only weekly passes.
Can I watch for free, without paying?
Yes, provided you are patient. To begin, watch each series’ free first episodes. Use rewarded ads to unlock more. Keep a daily check-in streak running. There are also official ReelShort channels on YouTube, TikTok and Dailymotion. All four combined go furthest.
Subscriptions and Cancellation
Until you stop them, weekly passes keep renewing. That comes as a surprise to plenty of people. Once you know where, cancelling is quick. How you paid determines where you cancel. Stores cancel store purchases. Companies manage website purchases.
Does deleting the app cancel the subscription?
No, and it is a common mistake. Apple states that removing an app does not end its subscription. Google makes the same point about uninstalling. My Drama’s terms include the same warning. The pass does not stop renewing until you cancel. Cancel first, delete afterward.
How do I cancel on iPhone?
Open the Settings app first. Tap on your name at the top. Then tap Subscriptions. Pick the drama app from the list. Tap Cancel, then confirm. Do it a day before renewal to be safe.
How do I cancel a subscription on Android?
First, open the Google Play Store app. Then go to your Subscriptions list. Choose the drama app there. Tap Cancel, then follow the prompts. Keep in mind that uninstalling cancels nothing. Recheck the list to confirm the change.
Can I cancel within the app?
Sometimes, but cancelling through the store is safer. In ShortMax’s terms, there is mention of an in-app option under About Subscription. The same terms direct store buyers to App Store or Google Play. Apple and Google control only what they billed. Buyers on the website should contact the company. Save a screenshot of every cancellation.
Why was I billed after a free trial?
Trial wording can be confusing. The developer of ShortMax admits that its « free trial » and « 24 hours free » labels confused people. Passes renew 24 hours before expiry, its terms say. The renewal is charged at the same price. Cancel one day before any trial ends. Then check the store shows it cancelled.
Refunds
Refunds hinge on who took your money. App Store charges go through Apple. Play charges are handled by Google. Website charges go through the companies. None of these routes guarantees a refund. The table below maps each path.
| Where you bought | How to cancel | Refund route | Things to watch |
|---|---|---|---|
| iPhone (App Store) | Settings, your name, Subscriptions, Cancel | The Report a Problem page from Apple | Deleting the app does not cancel it |
| Android (Google Play) | Google Play, Subscriptions, Cancel | Google in the first 48 hours, then the developer | Uninstalling won’t cancel |
| Website | The app company’s account or support | The app company alone | Often non-refundable, according to My Drama’s terms |
How do I get an Apple refund?
Start at Apple’s Report a Problem page. Sign in with the paying Apple ID. Choose the charge, then explain briefly. Within 24 to 48 hours, Apple usually replies. The decision is Apple’s, not the app maker’s. Also cancel the pass, or it renews.
How do refunds from Google Play work?
Timing is what counts most here. Within 48 hours of purchase, Google says you may get a refund. Make the request directly through Google Play. When that window is over, contact the developer. ReelShort sends users to Profile, then Feedback. If a renewal surprises you, act fast.
What about purchases made on a website?
The app company handles those. There, Apple and Google cannot help. My Drama’s terms label web purchases non-refundable except where law requires. Under its terms, EU and UK users have a 14-day withdrawal right. Each other company sets its own rules. Read the terms before paying online.
Can I get a refund for unused coins?
Usually not, and the terms confirm it. Under My Drama’s terms, coin purchases are final. ShortMax refuses refunds, unless its own fault renders a product unusable. Store requests may help with accidental purchases. Stick to the smallest bundle until a series grabs you. Mistakes then cost less.
Safety and Copycat Apps
Name confusion is rampant here. Small unrelated apps turn up after misspellings. A handful of downloads are unsafe. Some sites are copies of major brands. Sticking to real names protects your money. These answers separate the real from the fake.
Is there an app called Real Short?
No, not that we could find. Real Short is a misspelling of ReelShort. Other misspellings are « real short app », « realshot », « reel shot » and likely « shot shorts ». The real name is a single word. On the App Store, its seller is New Leaf Publishing. Check that before you download.
What exactly are ReelBox, DailyShort and GoldShort TV?
They are minor, unrelated apps. Found via « reel box » or « reelbox tv », ReelBox has 50K+ Android installs. It has no tie to ReelShort or DramaBox. DailyShort, which people often type as « daily short », has 100K+ installs. GoldShort TV is an Android TV app with 10K+ installs. Most people searching probably mean GoodShort.
Is ShortTV the same as ShortMax?
Very likely, although it is unconfirmed. The legal entity behind ShortMax is SHORTTV LIMITED in Hong Kong. Its website sends visitors on to ShortTV’s site. Both apps arrived in September 2023. We found no official rename announcement. Searches for « short tv » or « short max » also turn up unrelated apps.
Is it safe to use mod APKs and coin generators?
No, and none of them is official. A mod APK is an altered app copy from outside official stores. An unofficial modified version is how one DramaBox look-alike labels its download. Coin generators are likewise unofficial. What they do is something you cannot verify. Stick to the official stores and websites.
Why is ReelShort rated so low on Trustpilot?
ReelShort’s Trustpilot page lists 1.3 out of 5 from 250 reviews. Charges after cancelling are a frequent complaint. Weekly auto-renewals are often mentioned. Other reviewers mention coin prices and refused refunds. Any review site reflects the people who chose to post. Read it as a checklist rather than a verdict.
